I chose Venice as the first Street in the “L.A. Street Runner” collection because it literally represents “How it started vs. How it’s going”, if it was a Street. The mid-city house my mother was raised in, where I spent my first few years LIVing, with its owner, my Great Grandmother “Mom”, on the 1600 block of Ellsmere Ave, was 100 yards from the busy 6 LAne Venice Boulevard. Throughout my childhood in that house, there was a colorful cotton rag rug that sat in front of the kitchen sink that I was fascinated with. It looked like braids of colored fabric, collaged and stitched together in a rectangle. I would use it as a makeshift magic carpet and ride it on her hardwood floors like Aladin. Five years ago while LIVing in Hollywood, I bought a similar 6 foot rug/runner from IKEA. It reminded me of that childhood rug in Moms kitchen and would later become the experimental canvas for this work. I currently LIVe/Work in Venice Beach, 200 yards from Venice Boulevard in a home once owned by my late grandmothers ex-husband, where I also spent time throughout my childhood. She was an Artist, he was a Craftsman and they made stained glass art, and a daughter together in their Venice bungalow. Venice Bl is as prominent as ever in my life. Everyday I see those reflective street signs as I go to and from home and work. It’s where my creativity started, currently resides and is the pathway to my future. Venice is My Street.
Mom I made it!
